Intro

Mother is a healthy vending machine company with interactive touchscreens and cashless payment technology.

Digital agency Thin Martian, brought me in as a lead UX/UI designer to help Mother update the user journey and user interface of their system for the new, more modern, machines. My role included sketching, wireframing, prototyping, testing, UI and interaction design.

Challenge

The original machines were designed and built with a small 22" touchscreen and a slow system, which led to a high number of abandoned transactions. Mother then produced a more efficient and aesthetically better-looking machine with a larger 43" touchscreen.

They wanted to create a new and improved UX and UI design to work with this new screen and machine. Ultimately the aim was to create a slick and seamless second evolution of this unique interactive customer experience to improve customer engagement to secure more funding and be able to place their machines in more businesses around the UK.

Solution

After a one-day design sprint workshop, I understood that the main challenge was improving transaction speed to prevent users from abandoning their purchases and increase their engagement.

I did some sketches for rapid iteration and to discard some ideas quickly with the development team. Then, focussed on the main challenge, I created a simple user journey and worked on the interactions, making the purchase journey seamless and intuitive.
We also introduced a screen-saver which could be real-estate for ad-space. This allowed us to create another revenue stream without affecting the shopping journey. We tested the lo-fi prototype internally, and we got very positive results.

With feedback from the internal testing session and the constant communication with the engineers and developers, I created a high-fi prototype, which we tested with great success. Users could complete a transaction in just three steps.

Results

With the new machines, new user experience, interface design, and improved interactions, Mother considerably increased customer engagement. This led to more contracts from businesses and eventually to £3 million in funding, which the company would use to expand its operation throughout the UK.

This meant 1,000,000+ Happy Customers, 100+ Locations using the full-service solution and 100% Happy Businesses that would recommend Mother.
